Sometimes you take the lessons around you for granted. Sometimes it takes leaving the Maritimes for the Big Middle to teach you the life lessons of fishing. But the lessons life teaches you are there for a reason. And for James and John to forget the lessons that they learned in operating a fishing business, would prove dangerous indeed. This is the fifth part in our conclusion of Mark's Gospel and was preached on February 8 based on Mark 10:35-45

The story of the rich young ruler is one of our favourite stories. We tell it to our kids, we enshrine it in the Gospels, and we hold it in a special place in our hearts. But all of us feel the same way about it: that's not me. But what if the question isn't, how much of something do you get to keep, but how much of something keeps you apart from God? Then maybe the rich young ruler and our stories feel a lot more in line. This is the fourth part of our conclusion to Mark's Gospel and was preached on January 25 based on Mark 10:13-31

It's been said that you can judge a society based on how it treats its children. It seems fair enough to hold Jesus to that same standard. Kids have a way of asking questions that make us think about life in ways we might not otherwise. By simply asking "Why" they reveal a deeper layer to the world we all know and love. This is the second part in our conclusion of Mark's Gospel and was preached on January 11, based on Mark 9:30-50

You can't stay on the mountain. As good as things might be in the moment, it's the valley where things get real. And no sooner does Jesus descend the mountain then he runs headlong into the mess of the world. A sick child, a doubting father. But instead of belittling the father's lack of faith, he honours it - and in doing so gives us permission to wrestle with God, faith and doubt ourselves. This is the first part of the second half of our journey through Mark's Gospel, and was preached on January 4, 2014 based on Mark 9:14-29

The Transfiguration is the apex of Mark's journey. Everything has been building to this point, and from here Mark makes his speed run to the Cross. But on the mountain top, things pause for a few moments. Jesus gets to be Jesus, and his closest friends get to be with him in that moment. This is the final message in our journey through Mark before we take a few weeks off for Christmas. But this series will wrap up in the new year. It was preached on November 23, and is based on Mark 8:1-38
