0 Comments Prayer By Numbers (Part 4) - Prayer Revitalizes
Posted by Trinity Presbyterian Church on October 24, 2013 at 2:48 PM

We've been building something together. For the last three weeks we've heard Jesus help us assemble a skeleton. Now we're going to start putting some meat on the bones. If the Lord's Prayer is the answer to how should we pray, these three examples from the life of Jesus answer the question: when should we pray?

The Doxology that gets tacked onto the Lord's Prayer isn't Scripture, but it is ancient. Praying "Thine be..." is a powerful declaration about how we believe the world ought to be, and what we plan on doing about it.

We tend to think about Prayer as something that I bring to God, but in this second part of our look at the Lord's Prayer, we see that's not really the case at all. In fact, the prayer that Jesus taught his disciples is, overwhelmingly, a community prayer. So, what does it mean to pray "Give US OUR daily bread"; "Forgive US OUR debts as WE forgive OUR debtors"; and "Lead US not into temptation, but deliver US from Evil"?

Calling it the Lord's Prayer is like calling the Timbit Tim Horton's legacy. The prayer that Jesus taught his disciples isn't about a ritual recitation: it's about a careful and thoughtful examination of how we approach God. In the first part of three three-week mini series', we look at the opening section of the "Our Father" and see the balance and the challenge in praying the way Jesus taught us. Based on Matthew 6:9, this message was preached at Trinity, Grenfell on 29 September, 2013
